The Facts
Just a basic breif of what is being done in the Teviot Renovation project. This is only a breif overview. All the confirmed information was gathered from Tim Gee, the VPS of EUSA.

Middle Bar Confirmed
Middle Bar is being closed down as a bar and turned into a study area - the main bar will be taken out to reveal a window providing more light unto the area. It will have Wi-Fi access points for laptop users.

Unconfirmed
The area will be usable by societys for meetings and such forth. A new staircase is also supposedly planned to link the middle study area with the mezz.
Sportsmans Bar Confirmed
Little to nothing is being done (or has been currently planned) for the sportsmans bar.
Debating Hall and the Attic Bar Confirmed
The attic bar is currently awaiting its liquer licence (though ive drank in it...) but was constructed over the summer. It is a fairly swanky new bar located right at the top of teviot, with a roof terrace to boot. The plan is to open this up to debating hall users for when a function is on (currently debating hall users have to go down to middle bar). The debating hall is going to get a spruce up - this means skirting boards, walls and so forth are going to be cleaned/painted/replaced.

Unconfirmed
It is currently under discussion as to whether the attic bar should be open all the time for all patrons of the building - however it has been noted that teviot can be a bit of a black hole for EUSA funds and extra stafftime for bars which arent full can be a dubious investment. This is still a hot topic as far as the people overseeing the redevelopment are concerned.
Library Confirmed
This is currently in its final stages of completion - in that it is currently being built and finalised. This is located where the old teviot study area was and will provide a small area for people to smoke in. A point made was that it is easier to get ale pumped into the library.

Unconfirmed
I felt it was implied they would try and get more real ale into the library bar than middle bar (middle bar is too far away from the tap rooms for this to be plausable in there, thus they only have 1 ale).
Mezz Confirmed
Being extended into the washing area (which is being removed/moved). Neighbors is now being shown in it. It is intended to be a place to study and relax.

Unconfirmed
The dining area has been moved into the Terrace bar (truth) because of possible works being done where they used to serve food in the Mezz (possibility). Whether the intention is to move food back into the mezz is unknown.
Recpetion area Confirmed
Reception will be bought forward a little bit to make it a more inviting reception area. A bit of sprucing is to be done to the decor to help achieve a nicer place to come to.
The Underground Confirmed
The intention is to build an entrance to the underground that is entirely seperate from the main Teviot entrance. This will be done from the large firedoor at the back - where a ticket booth will be present for admittance straight off the street.
Thats pretty much the bulk of the work being done to the main areas of teviot. There are a few other points I was interested in... Tennants Tennants is staying - however the point was made that Teviot is a large sink for money, and Carling (thanks to NUS) makes an additional 20p per pint. It was also pointed out (and agreed on by myself ;-)) that both are fairly manky, though Tennants means more to this particular university. Timeline of events Done

Money The total cost of the renovation is £750 000. A third of this was donated last year by a University Development Trust and the remaining £500 000 is due to be fundraised in the coming academic year by a committee currently being selected. Areas for societys Some of the offices in Teviot may be changed into rooms for societys to use - these are smallish rooms which are actually quite ideal for this purpose. I don't know where the office workers will go. Student Surveys and knowledge A student survey was taken several years ago (numbers I have heard range from 5 to 7). The survey basically said Teviot lacked atmosphere, it lacked study space needed by students and its generally "grotty". Since this survey Middle bar has had an overhaul of its furnishings and the sportsmans bar has had a fresh lick of paint, a clean and some new furniture. As far as awareness goes Tim Gee has had articles published in Hype regarding the redevelopment of Teviot yet many of the people I know remain unaware of the bulk of changes happening in the coming year.
